+ February 6, 2020: De'Juana Thompson + In-Person

The Power of Personal Story: Berea and Black Girl Magic. We are a nation of individual stories woven together in the promise of democracy. Berea has always understood the power of personal story and collective conscience. We understand that our diverse, beloved community is what helps us to recognize the humanity in others. The power of Berea's story-telling and community-building curriculum is what sparked Ms. De’Juana Thompson’s unlikely story. She will explore her own unorthodox path as well as that of Carter G. Woodson and Barack Obama. Thompson, a 2005 Berea graduate, will share how a GSTR 101 Berea Stories class laid the foundation which allowed her not only to help elect and serve the first black U.S. president but to subsequently serve as a national political strategist championing issues of social justice. Carter G. Woodson Memorial Convocation.
