+ September 5, 2019: Dr. Jennifer Collins Bloomquist + In-Person

Linguistic Blackface: Language and Race in Children's Animated Film. A growing body of work by linguists, anthropologists, and critics of popular culture examines how social factors contribute to the construction of identity and the use of African American English (AAE). In her presentation, Dr. Jennifer Collins Bloomquist, Professor of Linguistics and Africana Studies at Gettysburg College, examines how animated films have historically exploited AAE voices to represent social and political ethnicities, and continue to do so today. This long-overlooked area of linguistic inquiry is essential to shining light on how we perceive language and race and package African American Englishes, stereotypes firmly intact, to the nation's youngest consumers.
