April Spotlight: Affrilachian Poets

April Spotlight: Affrilachian Poets In-Person

This month-long April Spotlight focuses on the Affrilachian Poets.

"April is National Poetry Month and we're celebrating by shining the spotlight on the Affrilachian poets. For 25 years, the predominantly African American group of writers known as the Affrilachian Poets have been “making the invisible visible.” The word “Affrilachia” is now defined in the Encyclopedia of Appalachia and the New Oxford American Dictionary as acknowledging the historical and contemporary presence of black people in Appalachia. For many in the Affrilachian Poets, the term makes room for more ways of understanding and naming one’s Appalachian identity." - Forrest Gray Yerman in Appalachian Voices
