Virtual Session: Beyond Borders, Beyond Textbooks: Open Pedagogy and the Global Information Society In-Person

Friday, May 9, 10-11am

Registration is required for this virtual session.

Presenters: Amanda Larson & Leticia Wiggans, The Ohio State University

In this session, we will collaboratively define open pedagogy with participants through an interactive activity using Mentimeter before exploring the latest iteration of International Studies 4850: Understanding the Global Information Society taught by Leticia Wiggans. This course was redesigned in 2021 to incorporate a semester long open pedagogy project where students authored Pressbook chapters on a specific country. We'll showcase the updated version of the course, highlighting the revised assignments (shifting the focus from exploring countries to ethnic groups), the updated student focused Pressbooks training, and then offer suggestions on how to use these or similar tools to create engaging, student-centered learning experiences using open pedagogy.

About the Presenters

Amanda Larson works as the Affordable Learning Instructional Consultant at The Ohio State University. Her role involves organizing professional development programs for staff, librarians, and instructors on open pedagogy and open educational practices. Additionally, she was the Open Pedagogy Fellow for the Open Education Network. In this capacity, she developed a curriculum for facilitating a learning circle focused on Open Pedagogy and conducted a pilot learning circle program for instructors, instructional designers, and librarians.

Leticia Wiggans is the Ethnic Studies Librarian at The Ohio State University. In this role, she liaises between the University Libraries and Center for Ethnic Studies to support faculty, students, and community members in their research and instructional goals. Leticia is currently instructing a class on The Global Information Society within the International Studies Program to promote critical thinking in the global information landscape and information cycle. She is constantly searching for novel ways to instruct students in issues relating to the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, and gender.
